Patients Discontinuing Weight-Loss Medications Put On Weight Far More Rapidly Than Those on Conventional Diets
New research reveals that people who come off blockbuster weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end traditional lifestyle regimens.
Findings released in a leading medical journal points out that while obese individuals frequently drop a large proportion of their body weight while on the medication, the mass returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"Individuals purchasing such medications need to be cognizant of the risk of fast rebound weight gain when the treatment ends," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain means a return to starting mass in about a year and a half.
Analyzing Approaches
The research, which looked at 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the outcomes of the injectable medications with older methods.
Researchers point out that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone typically have a more gradual weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
Understanding the Quick Regain
Nutrition scientists believe the mechanism of the injections accounts for the accelerated regain.
The injections mimic a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the system to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also lessen sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.
"Withdrawal of this medication results in appetite is uncontrolled, making excessive eating much more probable."
A Lifelong Disease?
Medical guidelines advise the jabs for people with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians contend that, given the high risk of weight regain, the therapy should be considered ongoing.
This perspective is supported by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "emphasize the long-term nature of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like hypertension.
User Experiences
People who have discontinued the medication explain a powerful resurgence of cravings.
"It felt as if something flipping and you're instantly extremely hungry," said a patient.
The struggle is worsened if users have not adopted sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.
Growing Use
Figures indicate that millions of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with demand continuing to grow.
- Use is more common among females compared to men.
- The middle-aged age group shows the greatest level of interest.
- Many access the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Finally, clinicians emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are potent agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic cure and long-term success relies on ongoing behavioural management.
